Welcome to Day 9!

Of all the files we could have made, there is none better to help really kick off and contextualize your journey than this writing by David Wolfe, one of the world’s leading nutrition advocates.

“You are not what you are, rather, what you are, is what you can be. The most interesting thing about life is that you can become more than you were before. You can become stronger, wiser, healthier than you ever dreamed possible. You can achieve your true potential. You can com­pletely reform your physical structure, your intelligence, your emotional poise, your spiritual power. This book is about how to biologically transmute the lead of life into the white gold of glory.

The Principle of Life Transformation is that life change comes from the inside out. All transformation begins with one person – you. As above, so below.

Everything happening around you is only a reflection of what is going on inside you. If you want the world to change, you have to change.

We are all personally responsible for the state of the entire world because the world only mirrors our inner selves. Pollution, famine, and disease are reflective of the inner crisis gripping us individually, and therefore collectively. These “realities” are fragments of our collective consciousness projected outward upon our environment.”

Another excellent example and teacher about life transformation is Anthony Robbins, author of Awaken the Giant Within. Robbins writes:

There are three specific beliefs about responsibility that a person must have if they’re going to create long-term change:

1) First, we must believe, “Something must change”-not that it should change, not that it could or ought to, but that it absolutely must. So often I hear people say, “This weight should come off,” “Procrastinating is a lousy habit,” “My relationships should be better.” But you know, we can “should” all over ourselves, and our life still won’t change! It’s only when something becomes a must that we begin the process of truly doing what’s necessary to shift the quality of our lives.

2) Second, we must not only believe that things must change, but we must believe, “I must change it.” We must see ourselves as the source of the change.-Otherwise, we’ll always be looking for someone else to make the changes for us, and we’ll always have someone else to blame when it doesn’t work out. We must be the source of our change if our change is going to last.

3) Third, we have to believe, “I can change it.” Without believing that it’s possible for us to change, as we’ve already discussed in the last chapter, we stand no chance of carrying through on our desires.

Without these three core beliefs, I can assure you that any change you make stands a good chance of being only temporary. Please don’t misunderstand me – it’s always smart to get a great coach (an expert, a therapist, a counselor, someone who’s already produced these results for many other people) to support you in taking the proper steps to conquer your phobia or quit smoking or lose weight. But in the end, you have to be the source of your change.

Healing Ourselves

Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh has said, “To heal the environment, we must first heal the environmentalist.”So true. Whether it is our family, the government, our community, or the world, we must first heal ourselves, and who better to do it than #1!

When we strive to become better ourselves, everything around us becomes better too. The environment we live in will become better or worse depending on whether we become better or worse. The people we associate with will become better or worse depending on whether we become better or worse. You automatically achieve improved results, when you become an improved person.

It seems the whole works of humankind are backwards. Most are try­ing to convince, instruct, and purify everyone else – without first puri­fying themselves. To enlighten others we have to enlighten ourselves.

The best way to make others healthy is to become incredibly healthy yourself, and Juice Feasting and this Nutrition Course are incredibly powerful crucibles for life transformation.

Reading as a Life Practice

“When you sell someone a book, you don’t sell them 12 ounces of paper and ink and glue – you sell him a whole new life.” – Christopher Morley

I (David) have chosen two important commentaries on reading today: Malcolm X and David Wolfe, as each have very important things to say on being inspired to read, and reading itself. In The Autobiography of Malcolm X, one of the experiences that most impressed upon me in undergraduate school was Malcolm’s burning desire to read and educate himself above the so-called education (read: indoctrination) he received from public schooling and living on the street. A few excerpts:

Anyone who has read a great deal can imagine the new world that opened. Let me tell you something: from then until I left that prison, in every free moment I had, if I was not reading in the library, I was reading on my bunk. You couldn’t have gotten me out of books with a wedge.

Fortunately, right outside my door was a corridor light that cast a glow into my room. The glow was enough to read by, once my eyes adjusted to it. So when “lights out” came, I would sit on the floor where I could continue reading in that glow.

At one-hour intervals the night guards paced past every room. Each time I heard the approaching footsteps, I jumped into bed and feigned sleep. And as soon as the guard passed, I got back out of bed onto the floor area of that light-glow, where I would read for another fifty-eight minutes-until the guard approached again. That went on until three or four every morning. Three or four hours of sleep a night was enough for me. Often in the years in. the streets I had slept less than that.

I have often reflected upon the new vistas that reading opened to me. I knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course of my life. As I see it today, the ability to read awoke inside me some long dormant craving to be mentally alive. I certainly wasn’t seeking any degree, the way a college confers a status symbol upon its students. My homemade education gave me, with every additional book that I read, a little bit more sensitivity to the deafness, dumb­ness, and blindness that was afflicting the black race in America. Not long ago, an English writer telephoned me from London,’ asking questions. One was, “What’s your alma mater?” I told him, “Books.”

You will never catch me with a free fifteen minutes in which I’m not studying something I feel might be able to help the black man.

This is the natural result of the inspiration we experience when we finally understand a way out of the miserable situation we are in, individually and collectively. I have reviewed many books on speed reading over the last three years, and this one is the best for training yourself. This technique alone will revolutionize your life.
