Welcome to Day 13!

Studies show that it is important to get a healthy amount of sunlight each day for ocular, skin, mental, and bone health! As you will read in today’s Downloads,  Heliotherapy: The Principles and Practice of Sunbathing by John Fielder and my file on Sunlight and Sunbathing, the sun is a healing agent on many levels, and this has been known for millennia.

This reality is corroborated and expounded upon in recent years in books such as The UV Advantage and The Vitamin D Solution by Michael Holick, MD; The Healing Sun by Richard Hobday, PhD; and Sunlight by Zane Kime.

Only recently with the advent of processed foods and resulting skin cancers has the sun been demonized to such an extent. You will see this more fully illustrated in today’s articles, in which Mike Adams has done a thorough job showing just how heliophobic modern medicine has made us.

Having distanced ourselves from nature, we now fear and blame it for the very problems nature – in the form of sunlight – can prevent and heal.

Sunlight and Sunbathing

Steve Arlin, author of Raw Power! writes: A common myth is that the sun causes skin cancer. The sun doesn’t cause skin cancer, the sun causes all life on Earth! Skin cancer is caused by toxicity within the body. When this toxicity is detoxified through the skin (our largest eliminative organ), it is sometimes “baked” onto the skin, bringing forth a cancer condition. Blaming the sun for skin cancer is like blaming fresh air for lung cancer.

You must have internal protection from the sun’s rays in the form of proper, natural, raw-food nutrition. External “protection” like sunscreen is an abomination. The same internal mechanism that keeps a plant from burning up under the hot sun can keep you from sunburning. A plant is in direct sunlight for hours upon hours every day of its existence. A plant dries up and dies when it no longer has the internal protection that it requires. The second best protection from sunburn is knowing when to retreat to shade for a rest.

David Wolfe nicely summarizes some of the health benefits of sun in The Sunfood Diet Success System:

Sunlight lowers blood sugar. It is a natural insulin. A diet high in sweet fruit must also be accompanied by Sunshine on the skin to help metabolize the sugar. Sunlight helps to store the sugar as glycogen in the liver, muscles, and cells for later use.

Exposing the skin to the Sun stimulates the capillaries and brings more blood to the skin surface. This helps to heal cuts, bruises, and rashes. In World War II it was discovered that exposing abrasions, open wounds, and broken bones to direct Sunlight led to quicker healing.

Fungus is destroyed by direct Sunlight. Candida cannot survive in direct Sunlight. I have worked with numerous people with candida. The first step to overcoming candida is Sunlight on the naked body (reference Lesson 13: How To Use The Sunfood Triangle, Eating To Overcome Candida).

Sunlight increases the strength of digestion. Sunlight increases the body’s internal “fire.” In Chinese oriental medicine we find the concept of yin-yang balance and we see that “cold” raw foods may be balanced with hot Sun energy.

Sunlight improves the eyesight and regulates the hormones. Occasion­ally bringing direct Sunlight into the eyes just for a brief moment, unmit­igated by glasses, windows, or filters, will help balance the body’s hormones.

Vitamin D

This topic is HUGE. One question raw vegans are often asked is about their calcium levels and vitamin D. A recent study was done on raw vegans, and the results on vitamin D levels surprised Dr. Fontana, who headed the study. He wrote:

The [raw vegans] also lacked other biological markers that would signal osteoporosis in other populations. “These people are clever enough to expose themselves to sunlight to increase their concentrations of vitamin D,” speculated Dr. Fontana. “I thought vitamin D might have been a problem for them, but it was not.”

This does not mean that you are cut off from world events, entertainment, or education. You can get all of that from using the internet, which we have found is far more dynamic, and when the best sites are visited, is absent of ad nonsense, which is difficult even on PBS or the Discovery Channel. Watch DVDs on your computer!

Katrina and I have had our best years when we live without the crazymaking TV. Katrina grew up without a television, and the highest SAT/verbal score David ever knew of was from a friend who did not have television in the house. Love yourself and your family, and chuck the TV for better, more nutrient-dense information sources. The idea that sunscreen prevents cancer is a myth. It's a myth promoted by a profit-seeking tag-team effort between the cancer industry and the sunscreen industry. The sunscreen industry makes money by selling lotion products that actually contain cancer-causing chemicals. It then donates a portion of that money to the cancer industry through non-profit groups like the American Cancer Society which, in turn, run heart-breaking public service ads urging people to use sunscreen to "prevent cancer."

They get absorbed right through the skin (a porous organ that absorbs most substances it comes into contact with) and enter the bloodstream.

In a report published in June 2007, the effect of administering 1,000 IU/day of vitamin D (with calcium) was evaluated in 1,180 postmenopausal women living in the Midwest. Unlike some recent flawed studies, the researchers took extraordinary steps to ensure that study participants were really taking their supplements and that all other variables were tightly controlled.

After only four years, the risk of contracting any cancer was 60% lower in the vitamin D (and calcium) group compared with the placebo arm of the study.

Dr. Holick: Sure, I’ve been doing research in the vitamin D field for, now, more than 30 years, and I happened to be in the right place at the right time as a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, and worked with one of the authorities in vitamin D, Dr. Hector DeLuca. As a graduate student my PhD project was actually the isolation and identification of the active form of vitamin D, and my roommate and I, over the next two years, were the first to chemically synthesize it. An insider with the guts to oppose mainstream guidelines on exposure to sunlight, the best way for most people to make vitamin D, and on taking more than 400 IU of vitamin D per day in supplements, Dr. Holick has followed in Dr. Linus Pauling’s footsteps, doing for vitamin D what Pauling did for vitamin C. Here is a fearless quotation describing some of the advice you may have believed:

“So desperate is the anti-sun lobby to convince you of the dangers of the sun so that you will buy its products year-round, the representatives will tell you with a straight face that if it’s February in Boston and you’re planning to walk to the corner store to buy a quart of milk or sit outside on your lunch break, you should wear [smear on] sunscreen. Evidence is given from Dr. Holick’s own work and others that vitamin D levels are too low in a large fraction of the world’s humans, especially those with dark skin and living more than 30° from the equator. This deficiency causes more osteoporosis, rickets, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attacks, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and cancer than had been believed just 20 years ago. The types of skin cancer caused by excessive sunlight are easily treated and are rarely fatal.

With the greatest care, Dr. Holick explains how to obtain the UVB rays from the sun (or tanning parlor lights) without receiving too much UVA or becoming burned. He does advocate the use of sunscreens, the ones that absorb UVA as well as UVB, after you have had all the sun exposure that is safe. For the very pale-skinned or for arctic dwellers, supplements are advocated.

Dr. Liberman says that “light is the basic component from which all life originates, develops, heals, and evolves.” Everything that humans do is affected in some way by light. Light has been used for healing since the time of ancient Egypt. Modern scientists began recognizing the benefits of light therapy in the late 1700’s. Although many people believe the ultraviolet (UV) light is harmful, Dr. Liberman maintains our bodies need at least a small amount of UV light in order to function properly.

He cites studies which indicate that, due to all the ways in which we block sunlight from our lives, including wearing sunglasses designed to block out UV rays, “it is possible that we are unknowingly contributing to the increased incidence of blindness and eye disease in this country.” Dr. Liberman does warn against looking at the sun directly, or exposing ourselves to it between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., but emphasizes that light is a nutrient for the body. He says people need to be outside in natural light, without sunglasses or sun block, for a minimum of one hour a day. He warns that warm-white and cool-white fluorescents “should absolutely be avoided.” People who cannot get outside regularly need to equip their work areas with full-spectrum light fixtures. Syntonics is the name given to light therapy, which involves utilizing specific colors for healing specific ailments.

Dr. Liberman discusses its benefits in treating vision problems, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), cancer, and learning disabilities. He says that “as we continue to discover and understand the role that light plays in our lives, its use as both a therapeutic and preventive tool will become more evident.” Because each individual is different, Light: Medicine of the Future doesn’t get into prescribing particular colors for each potential illness.
