Day 14: Enzymes: A Secret of Health and Longevity

Dr. Gabriel Cousens, M.D.; Edward Howell; Dr. Anthony Cichoke; Enzyme Types: Metabolic and Digestive; Enzyme Preservation

Today you are going to learn in-depth about one of the most remarkable aspects of Live Food Nutrition – enzymes.

“Enzymes are substances that make life possible. No vitamin, mineral or hormones can do any work without enzymes. They are the manual workers that build the body from proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. The body may have the raw building materials, but without the workers, it cannot begin.” - Dr. Edward Howell

Welcome to Day 14!

We use enzymes for just about every function in our bodies, yet as we age, our enzyme potential diminishes. What does this mean for our health? Our immune system, and our abilities to heal grow weak, and we experience the aging process. Tissues sag, it takes longer to recover from illness, tendons tighten, scar tissue increases, our blood thickens with fibrin, and so on.

There is a means available to us to counteract this aging process, and place less of a burden upon our system–through the use of live foods (which contain food enzymes) and exogenous enzyme supplementation, i.e. digestive enzymes with meals and proteolytic enzymes (that help your body do building, maintaining, and repair work) such as Vitalzym, which Dr. Cousens and I integrated for most patients we worked with.

Enzymes: A Secret of Health and Longevity

One of today’s downloads, “Enzymes: A Secret of Health and Longevity” by Dr. Gabriel Cousens, M.D., is information that, when put into practice, will benefit you for the rest of your life. This is definitely one of the best readings available on this aspect of live food nutrition. A few excerpts:

“A doctor at Tufts Medical School found that in 100% of the cases of obesity he studied, all had lipase [fat burning enzyme] deficiencies. . .eating cooked fats or oils causes an eventual lipase deficiency in the system.”

BABIES WHO ARE NOT BREAST-FED are immediately forced to deal with a lipase and amylase deficiency in their food because they get almost no enzymes at all in pasteurized milk. In a study of more than 20,000 babies, the rate of illness was compared between completely breast-fed babies and bottle-fed babies. Pasteurized milk-fed babies had a mortality rate 56 times greater than breast milk-fed babies.

In research at George Washington University Hospital, when 50 grams of raw starch was administered to patients, the blood sugar only rose 1 mg in one-half hour before it began to decrease. With the cooked starch there was a dramatic average increase of 56 mg in one-half hour and then a 51-mg average drop by one hour.

EATING RAW FOODS IS A POTENT ACTIVITY which preserves enzymes and maximizes health.

Enzyme Preservation

I compiled this file while doing research for Dr. Cousens (2007). One of the big arguments that health professionals often try to level at Live Food Nutrition is that the living enzymes in our food have no effect on our health whatsoever. The claim is that enzymes in our food do not pass through the stomach to the intestines, where they are absorbed into the bloodstream. This file has been developed to put an end to this fallacious argument once and for all. The Debate is Over, folks. Enzymes are absorbed. Enjoy this important download.

Book: Enzymes for Health and Longevity

You get a whole book on the subject today! The book, Enzymes for Health and Longevity by Dr. Edward Howell, with an Introduction by health pioneer Viktoras Kulvinskas. Also includes an INTERVIEW of Dr. Howell by Viktoras Kulvinskas. This book is an important work in the field of Live Food Nutrition.

Vitalzym

Also included today is a file on Vitalzym, developed by head research expert Dr. William Wong. You may already be initially familiar with Vitalzym from reading the Ingredients List for the Juice Feast, but here is a quick recap:

+ Vitalzym helps reinforce the body’s defense mechanism in the following ways:
+ Fibrin: Normal levels help guard against the formation of fibrin.
+ Blood: Enzymes help cleanse the blood of debris, maintaining blood health.
+ Immune Function: Enzymes help maintain healthy immune systems.
+ Healthy Circulation: Normal enzyme levels help promote blood circulation.
+ Reduce Inflammation: Helps your body repair damaged tissue, such as post-operative injuries, cuts and bruises. Reduces swelling and inflammation, which often alleviates pain, as is often the case in patients with arthritis or chronic back pain.

Make sure you note the section, “Vitalzym Dosing for Common and Chronic Conditions” in the file we have for you on this important healing asset.

Congratulations on the continuation of your Juice Feast!

We are truly proud of you. Are you writing, blogging, or videoing your Feasting experience? You will want to remember this important juncture in your life!

See you in The Green Room!

Enzyme Preservation

by David Rainoshek, M.A.

This file is a result of research Dr. Gabriel Cousens asked me to do while I was his Research Assistant in 2007. What you will find is an excellent assimilation of definitive information on the preservation – not complete destruction – of enzymes in our food when we eat it. An excellent resource to answer the questions, “Do enzymes survive the stomach?’

Vitalzym™ provides the enzymes needed for each of the millions of biochemical reactions that make life possible. Without enzymes, life could not exist.

Vitalzym is a safe and effective enzyme supplement formulated for individuals seeking relief from inflammation and fibrosis conditions. As we age, our body’s natural production of enzymes may slow. Supplementation with Vitalzym along with proper diet and exercise helps to maintain normal enzyme levels, balancing your body’s own repair mechanisms. Vitalzym is a safe option for alleviating chronic pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis and fibrosis.

Food Enzymes for Health and Longevity

by Dr. Edward Howell

A Classic and important book on enzymes. This is one of the first books I read regarding the importance of Live Foods Nutrition.

This new, enlarged edition of the classic book contains over 400 references to scientific literature that contributed to the formulation of Dr. Howell's revolutionary Food Enzyme Concept. Minor corrections and modifications have been made for greater clarity, and a new glossary of scientific terms has been incorporated to facilitate understanding of the contents. Included in the book is an interview by Viktoras Kulvinskas with Dr. Edward Howell.

Treating Diabetes with Enzymes” by Dr. William Wong, ND, PhD

Up to a year ago, for anyone asking if systemic enzymes could help lessen the load of troubles that beset Type 1 diabetic patients, I would have told them about lowering pancreatic inflammation, and possibly helping with lower extremity circulatory issues. I would have never suggested that the use of enzymes could decrease the need for insulin, increase energy or reverse the seemingly myriad of things diabetics suffer from. Then we started getting information from Type 1 patients that amazed even me and that have subsequently sparked new research. Here are two typical case histories.

“Enzymes: the Key to Longevity” by Tim O’Shea

Enzymes “… are the most important unit in the human body, because every chemical change that takes place to repair tissue or to assimilate food involves the activity of enzymes. Without enzyme activity there is no life. No plant or animal can live without the activity of its enzymes.”-

Biologically, we are nothing more than collections of living cells. What happens to our cells happens to us. Life functions of cells are mediated by enzymes. A MUST-READ article by Tim O’Shea…

Great Books

by Dr. Edward Howell

Dr. Howell is often called the “father of food enzymes”. During the ’30’s and ’40’s of this century, he did incredible research to prove that food enzymes were an essential nutrient, and that cooking and processing of foods destroy them, thereby creating dramatic changes in our ability to digest food and remain healthy. This is a classic in the field.

by Dr. Anthony J. Cichoke

The Complete Book of Enzyme Therapy gives a clear picture of enzymes -what they are, what they do, and how they can be depleted in the body. It then explains how you can begin an enzyme-rich diet, and when, why, and how enzyme supplements may be taken. Also provided are enzyme treatments for more than 150 conditions. Anthony J. Cichoke, D.C., Ph.D., is a chiropractor with a doctorate in nutrition. He hosts an internationally syndicated radio talk show called “The Dr. Enzyme Self-Help Show.” He has written several books, including The Complete Book of Enzyme Therapy for Avery, and hundreds of articles on the subjects of nutrition and chiropractic. He lives in Portland, Oregon.

by Dr. Anthony J. Cichoke

Enzymes–living substances that regulate health–work with certain minerals in our bodies to form an antioxidant system that fights corrosive free radicals. This fully updated second edition explains how to make the most of this amazing natural partnership to speed recovery from injury and lessen the effects of back pain, multiple sclerosis, viruses, and fatigue. Dr. Cichoke shows how every life process depends on enzymes. He covers a broad range of subjects starting with digestion, elimination, co-enzymes, how to obtain more enzymes in your diet and through supplementation. He has a 5-step program of do’s and don’ts, including avoidance of aluminum cookware, refined sugars and salt, coffee, and so on. He also tells you how and what to eat and how to prepare foods for the best utilization of enzymes. Dr. Cichoke addresses a large range of health problems from extending life to AIDS and cancer. He also covers medications that affect enzymes, including OTC drugs and prescription drugs, as well as foods that contain enzyme inhibitors. This is a great book! One I believe everyone should own. I also would strongly suggest Dr. Cichoke’s book “The Complete Book of Enzyme Therapy”. This book is set up very much like the “Prescription for Natural Healing”, however it addresses health from an enzyme point of view.

by Dr. Gabriel Cousens, M.D.

“In this book, an expanded revision of his 1992 work, Cousens endeavors to make his readers aware of how their food choices affect their bodies, minds, emotions, and spiritual life. He emphasizes there is no one-diet-fits-all approach, but rather a consciousness on the part of the individual of what works. He includes information on the oxidative, autonomic, ayurvedic, anabolic-catabolic, endocrine, blood-type, and acid base diet systems. In personalizing a diet, the individual needs to answer these questions:

• Am I emotionally stable after eating?
• Do I have increased physical energy after eating?
• Am I craving any foods?

“Cousens details studies where poor diets were fed to indigenous groups such as the Kurds, Yemenites, and Zulus. The indigenous people studied had been introduced to highly refined carbohydrate foods and suffered from degenerative conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. He points to a diet of fast, frozen, and processed foods, adopted by Americans and peoples of most industrialized nations, as one that is inadequate. He characterizes this diet as one loaded with refined sugar, white flour, and pesticides.

“The author establishes guidelines for healthy eating by recommending that people consume natural, whole, and organic foods and that the diet be primarily fresh, live raw foods. He advocates a high-complex-carbohydrate, low-protein, and low-fat regimen with attention to receiving adequate sunlight. Deep breathing, bathing, and contact with nature in the form of gardening or hikes all have therapeutic effects.

“In this era where so many things are condensed or encapsulated, reading a book with 850 pages is a daunting task. In this case, it’s worth the effort. In Conscious Eating Gabriel Cousens has compiled a handbook that emphasizes the benefits of a raw food diet. He has woven together many philosophies from around the world and incorporated them into a body-mind-spirit program that will be beneficial to the individual and to all mankind. The book is a valuable reference tool that belongs in every vegetarian’s library.”

by Dr. Edward Howell

Revised and enlarged 2nd edition, this book includes much of the research material utilized by Dr. Howell to develop the “food enzyme concept.” It also includes hundreds of references to support the conclusions and sets forth a number of principles. This new enlarged edition of the classic book now contains over 400 of those references to scientific literature which partly helped Dr. Howell formulate his revolutionary “Food Enzyme Concept.” Minor corrections and modifications have been made for greater clarity, and a new glossary of scientific terms has been incorporated to facilitate understanding of the concepts.
